Lightning adds Brandon Hagel to their mid-six, sends two first-round players to the Blackhawks – The Athletic

The exchange

Love at first sight: forward Brandon Hagel and fourth-round picks in 2022 and 2024.

Blackhawks get: forwards Taylor Raddysh and Boris Katchouk and first-round picks in 2023 and 2024.

Dom Luszczyszyn: Getting Blake Coleman in 2020 was a big key to Tampa Bay’s back-to-back Stanley Cups. A forecheck threat in the middle of the six with sneaky scoring efficiency. All this in the long term on a cheap and profitable offer.

The key in 2022: Don’t pay full price for Coleman — find the next Coleman. That’s exactly what the Lightning did here by letting Coleman walk the summer and trading for Brandon Hagel. While Hagel doesn’t quite fit the bill, it has enough elements to make it a worthwhile company.

According to GSVA, Hagel should be worth roughly what Coleman was worth at the time: 1.5 wins. It’s a very significant addition to a team’s middle six and should add immediate depth to the Lightning’s bottom line. They’re a solid team now and that’s down to Hagel’s sneaky efficiency and forechecking presence. Hagel is scoring at 55-point pace despite limited use of the power play thanks in part to his efficiency off the run. And a probably unsustainable shooting percentage.
